School Smartphone Policy Letter
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and Insulin Pump Smartphone Access in Schools
As schools across South Africa introduce stricter smartphone policies, these policies need to consider learners who rely on smartphones as part of their diabetes management.
For learners using a CGM and/or insulin pump, a smartphone can be essential for viewing glucose levels, receiving important alerts and managing their diabetes safely throughout the school day.
SA Diabetes Advocacy has developed a letter to help explain the role of diabetes technology in the school environment and support access to smartphones when they are needed for diabetes management.
Download and use this letter to support conversations with schools and advocate for safe access to diabetes technology throughout the school day.
This letter has been developed to support families of learners living with diabetes and may be presented alongside any medical documentation requested by the school. Parents or healthcare professionals may provide additional clinical information where appropriate.
